Boy, is my face red. A guy who has been a close and generous friend for at least a decade and a half—and who, along with his guitar and backing vocals, will be making it possible for me to perform my Toastmaster's concert at GAFilk XIII next month—had a birthday yesterday. Unfortunately, even though I was online for at least a couple hours last night, I clean forgot to note it here.

To my Trained Pet Guitarist™ [livejournal.com profile] gorgeousgary, happy belated birthday and many abject apologies for the omission. I hope you and your lovely wife had a marvelous time celebrating...and I promise to make it up to you when you get down here in a few weeks.

Hey, I'm not having birthday dinner with Dad until tomorrow and Mom until Tuesday. (And my own celebratory housefilk was a week early.) So I'm not adverse to streeeeeetching out the range of days I accept birthday greetings over! 8-)

Thanks and see 'ya in Jawja!

Hello to both Matt and Gary. Gary is one of a handful of people I have friended who have not friended me back, but he sounds (you sound? Gary, you're reading this, aren't you?) like an utterly marvelous filker whom I would enjoy hanging out and jamming with. Part of why I love the filk community is that, as in any group, it is actually composed of a whole lot of individuals -- and they're individuals I want to meet. Happy mildly belated birthday to Gary, in any event.

Nate

Nate, I'm surprised to hear you haven't heard or met Gary, as many filk cons and tracks at other cons he's been to and performed (both in scheduled concerts and informally in open filks). He is indeed an utterly marvelous filker in his own right, and I also ought to have mentioned that in the original post.

If you manage to make it down here early next month for GAFilk, you can get the chance to hang out and jam with both of us as well as a whole mess of other very marvy folks.

And Gary? Friend the guy back already, willya? He's pretty neat too - he's the guy who wrote "I Pop Pills" and "I Can't Get Over You..." among many other gems.

From the subject line, I though maybe you had forgotten your fiancee's birthday. So I think I'll just congratulate you on dodging that faux pas!

Oh, I assure you I did NOT forget that birthday - it's just that since she's on Facebook now, I announced it there, whereas Gary is here and not there (so far as I know). And I called her in Tanzania to make the wish directly on the morning of her day.

Y'know, it happens to all of us.

During the High Holy Days this year (I promise, this will be relevant) our rabbi told us about a Jewish mindfulness retreat she'd attended:
At one point the instructor said, "Go outside and have a conversation with God. You have fifty minutes." There were instant protests, along the lines of "I don't believe in a personal God!", to which the instructor answered, "Pretend."
Our rabbi suggested we consider that one of our options. So I did, and this is part of ... what ensued in my mind, as I wrote it down after services:
What can I do?

Do the best you can.
Don't punish yourself. Leave that to Me.

I can't believe You said that.

Neither can I.
Okay?
