AKICILJ: Why won't my WinXP laptop shut down?

Since I seem to have a fairly high percentage of techies in my flist and readership, I thought I'd post this here first in hopes of a quick solution. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running Windows XP. Lately, when I select "Shut Down" from the Start button on the taskbar, then click the Shut Down button in the follow-on dialog, nothing happens. It just sits there and keeps running unless I manually shut the thing off from the power switch. Anyone know why this could be happening? (It seems to work from the logon screen when switching users or coming back from screensaver mode, but not otherwise.)

Don't know.

My computer is also starting to act wonky, so I'm backing up all my data.
