Sad to say, I have another name to add to my list of people who ordinarily were not in a risky line of work, but found themselves called upon to risk all for the sake of doing the right thing. Today I mourn Liviu Librescu, age 76, professor of engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, survivor of the Nazi Holocaust and a Soviet gulag, who threw himself before the classroom door through which a demented student was firing a 9mm Glock (which no such nutjob should ever have been allowed to get his hands on; but that's a rant for another day) and gave his life to save the lives of his students. His was one of the truly inspiring stories to come out of Monday's shocking events on the Blacksburg, VA campus. London's TimesOnline has an excellent column on Dr. Librescu's life and sacrifice here. Also, Univ. of Virginia-Richmond alum Ben Lansing has a very moving editorial cartoon on the shootings fronting his website here.
And on behalf of all who have ever attended or worked at Louisiana State University's Baton Rouge campus or the rest of the LSU System, I extend deepest sympathies and wishes for courage and healing to our brethren and sistren at VTech. I may be a Tiger by degree, but in this sad week, we are all Hokies.
