As noted by several others on my friends list, actor Peter Boyle has passed away at the age of 71, from a devastating combination of multiple myeloma and heart disease. Although he did manage to cop an Emmy for his work on the now-defunct CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond as the title character's crusty father, Frank Barone, he did at least as much fine work in the movies and never once got a nod from the Academy, so far as I can see. He got a slew of nominations for just about every other award actors can get in Hollywood, according to his IMDB.com page.
Of course, in this community he will always and forever be most fondly remembered as the Creature from Mel Brooks' classic sendup of horror films, Young Frankenstein ("That's Frahn-ken-schteen!"). He also picked up some genre cred from appearances in The X-Files and the Peter Hyams skiffy flick Outland. (While the latter had many flaws, as Harlan Ellison exhaustively proved, not even he could fault Boyle's performance.) He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
