My friend
annezieger has asked me to post this here for her, as she is still recovering from exhaustion. Their 7-year-old eldest son, Benny, has just been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and is expected to remain institutionalized for an indefinite period. Anne and her husband,
darrenzieger, have been coping on their own for years now with Benny's acting out, violent behavior, hallucinations (or at least a very vivid imagination) and generally been too worn to half a frazzle to have any lives of their own, much less be social and maintain friendships. Now that Benny has been diagnosed autistic (high-functioning, but autistic nonetheless) and is getting the round-the-clock care he needs from someone else, A&D are able to breathe and have begun trying to reconnect with friends, Your Humble Correspondent included.
If anyone has perceived them as being standoffish up to now, please understand that they have not meant to be; it was simply that focusing on Benny's special needs has impaired their response to others. While Anne assures me that they are financially and materially in decent shape for the moment, they would like to hear from anyone interested enough to give them a call or write via e-mail or snail-mail. Any offers of babysitting for their younger child, Dorian, to give them a night out together or other domestic help would also be appreciated.
Anne and her family are very dear to me; some of you know that I was Anne's former partner before my move to New York. If you can take a moment to give her a buzz and let her know she and the Slothâ„¢ still have friends out there, I would take it as a personal favor. You can probably reach them through their LJs; if you need help, e-mail me privately. This has been almost like a death in the family to her, and she can use all the kindness she can get.
