On the upset win of the Academy Award for Best Picture last night by CRASH... Here's all you need to know about how BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN could win every other major film industry award for Best Picture and still lose the Big One at the Oscars: The average age of the voting membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is 65.

What it comes down to is, however liberal the Academy's voters may otherwise be, they still are mostly of an older generation, and they still couldn't get past the "ick" factor to give it to BROKEBACK. Damfino why everybody is so shocked.
(POSTSCRIPT: 4/10/06) My partner, Mary, oh-so-helpfully points out my own hypocrisy in calling the Academy members on inability to get past the "ick" factor when I have up to now refused to go see the film with her for the same reason. I have therefore agreed to watch the DVD at her convenience. Review to follow.)
