Well, I tried that "What Christmas Carol Are You?" quiz going around, and it got me totally wrong. It figured me for a religious "Silent Night" type when I'm way more "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." (Though I will admit that "O Holy Night" can still cause me to tear up, especially the Céline Dion version. You can take the boy out of the Catholic Church, but...) But it got me thinking of the whole long playlist of novelty and parody songs I have on my Mac at home in the iTunes library marked "Holiday Hilarity." A small sampling:
  • "Santa Claus Is Watching You," by Ray Stevens (the original, not any of his subsequent remakes);
  • "Santa's Gonna Kick Your Ass," by The Arrogant Worms (great for scaring those bratty kids of yours back into line for the holidays);
  • "You Ain't Getting Diddly Squat," by Heywood Banks;
  • "It's So Chic to Be Pregnant At Christmas," by Nancy White;
  • "Christmas At Ground Zero" and "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al Yankovic;
  • "The 12 Pains of Christmas," "The Most Fattening Time of the Year" and "Police Stop My Car" (TTTO "Feliz Navidad"), by Bob Rivers and company;
  • "Gridlock Christmas," by The Hollytones; and
  • "Green Chri$tma$," by Stan Freberg (which got him into serious trouble with his sponsors when he first recorded it circa 1965 or so).
What's your favorite demented holiday music (for Christmas or any other concurrent observance)?

Any of Benny Grunch and the Bunch's Christmas songs, but especially "12 Yats of Christmas," "If I Won the Lott'ry for Christmas," and "Oh Little Town of Destrehan." Oh, and "Santa and His Raindeer Used To Live Right Here."

*panics* I have no idea what's become of our "12 Yats of Christmas" tape since the move! Hopefully it's in with the Christmas decorations, but if not, I guess I'll be sending one of the in-laws to Walgreens.

"12 Yats of Christmas"? If you find that on a CD, let me know so I can snag a copy.

You can order it from their website: http://www.bennygrunch.com/

And the new 2006 edition has three new songs:
"I Think I Just Seen Elvis in the Mildew on my Walls"
"It Must Be Great to be a Meter Maid at Christmas"
and
"I'm Dreaming of a White Trailer"

Thanks. BTW, you might appreciate this, though it's highly inapropos of the season:

That's great! I think if you could find a way to get that recorded, it would become a Mardi Gras classic. (And if it replaced even 1% of the radio airplay of "Mardi Gras Mambo," it would be a boon to all mankind.)

Lehrer's "Christmas Carol," for one.

"You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" as performed by Thurl Ravenscroft.

I also like "Christmas Rapping" by the Waitresses, which is more novelty than demented, and for some reason, I have an irrational enjoyment of "Twelve Days of Christmas" by Bob and Doug Mackenzie.

"Christmas in July" Eclectica mix

I made a mix of "eclectic and demented winter-holday songs that stand up to repeated listening" several years ago as part of series of CD mixes. The track list inclues a few of the songs you've mentioned already, but here's the full list:

ECLECTICA #17: Christmas In July
A Christmas Carol (Tom Lehrer)
Yuletide Rock Opera Act II (Polish Muslims)
Christmastime (The Arrogant Worms)
I Won't Be Home For Christmas (Ray Stevens)
We Wish You Weren't Living With Us (Bob Rivers)
Do You Hear What I Hear / You Really Got Me (Bobby Lloyd and the Skeletons)
A Lonely Jew At Christmas ("South Park")
The Chanukah Song (part 1) (Adam Sandler)
The Chanukah Song (part 2) (Adam Sandler)
Santa's Got A Brand New Bag (The Bobs)
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer (Elmo & Patsy)
I Am Santa Claus (Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio)
Yuleman vs. the Anti-Claus (The Bobs)
Christmas Is Almost Here (The Arrogant Worms)
It's So Chic To Be Pregnant At Christmas (Nancy White)
Christmas In L.A. (The Bobs)
Vincent The Christmas Virus (The Arrogant Worms)
A Nonoffensive Nondenominational Holiday Song ("South Park")
Homo Christmas (Pansy Division)
Jesus' Birthday (Bob Rivers)
Manger 6 (Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio)
We Three Bings (The Three Bings)
"Oh God, I'm Santa Claus!" (The Arrogant Worms)
Santa's Gonna Kick Your Ass (The Arrogant Worms)
Things Are Looking Bad For Santa (The Arrogant Worms)
The Night Santa Went Crazy ("Weird Al" Yankovic)
Christmas At Ground Zero ("Weird Al" Yankovic)
Yuletide Rock Opera Act I (Polish Muslims)
New Year's Resolutions (Scary Gary Alan)

I selected the tracks for this mix in July 1999. There's nothing quite like driving around in a non-air-conditioned car in Michigan in July, listening to Christmas music.

How about our own Andy Eigel's filk classic, "Donner Party" a/k/a "The Night I Shot Old Rudolph Down", ttto "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"? "...and all the people were singin', they sang, Fa-la-la-la-la-la....."

I have a nostalgic fondness for "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas"; Bob Rivers really revs my holiday irreverence; and I obviously need to hunt down the Arrogant Worms holiday album.

For more mainstream holiday delights, there's always Mediaeval Baebes, Maddy Prior, Baltimore Consort, Jethro Tull, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir [whose "Hallelujah Chorus" can't be beat]. Prior to last week, I would've said that, for "O Holy Night", there was mostly Nat King Cole. Then I heard Three Quarter Ale's exquisite 3-part harmonies in a holiday set. Fortunately, they've said their next album is holiday music.

When y'all come to visit, we'll share some cool music. [hint: bring a spare external hard-drive.]

Btw, I have a discount card from Books-a-Million & am always up for a trip; [livejournal.com profile] mbernardi & I will be going down before GaFilk anyway.
