Normally you'll see me doing handstands naked in the fountain at Centennial Olympic Park before you'll see me paying homage to any Republican politician, especially these days. But former US Representative and President Gerald R. Ford, who turned 93 last July (and was hospitalized very shortly after), deserves credit for his long years of exemplary public service...and even more for the role he played in guiding America out of the "long national nightmare" (his words) that occurred the last time a sitting President tried to make himself king.

As boston.com, The Boston Globe's website, reports here, the still-convalescent (but recovering) Michigander is now the longest-lived Chief Executive in our nation's 2.25-century history, having passed the previous record holder, Ronald Reagan. Many years more of life to you, Mr. President...and thank you from an eternally grateful nation—not least for reminding us all that the wingnuts haven't succeeded in chasing out all the good, honorable and decent people in your party (yet).
