ORIGINAL SONG: "Never Again" Is Now
Apr. 1st, 2021 03:04 pmI wrote this song during the last administration. It may be gone, but its leader, may he rot in hell for several eternities, is not...and neither are his (far too many) followers, nor the ugly sentiments that inspired them. We still have work to do, which is why this song is (sadly) still relevant. Listen to it here:
"Never Again" Is Now
“NEVER AGAIN” IS NOW
Music & lyrics by Matt G. Leger
When we saw Treblinka, Auschwitz and Dachau,
The world gasped in horror and all wondered how
A country could send its own people to die
Because they were different, or questioned the lie.
We know how it started, quite simply at first—
When people need scapegoats, they unleash their worst;
We cried and we swore to the heavens back then
That we’d learn from it all and vowed, “Never again!”
Well...
Chorus:
“Never again,” “never again,”
“Never again” is now - right now!
Yes, “never again,” “never again,”
“Never again” is now!
The century’s new, but the strategy’s old
And those who employ it are growing more bold,
With a leader who acts like a king with no crown,
Ignores all the laws and puts “those people” down
Camps on the border hide suffering and fear;
“Go back where you came from!” to people born here
They’re trying to gas-light the nation, my friends—
We’ve all seen this movie; we know how it ends!
Repeat Chorus
Bridge:
It can happen here and it spreads everywhere;
Don't take my word for it -- ask those who were there.
They're few now in number, but some still remain
And tell us fascism's in fashion again.
The families from Europe, the Nisei here too;
They've seen what it looks like - they'll tell you it's true
The vile chants at rallies, the rants in our stores
All tell us this foulness is here on our shores...
We've broken that promise too often before
In Bosnia, Serbia, Rwanda and more;
Now this poison weed's taken root here at home
In soil that was always as fertile as loam.
How far will it go, how much blood will be spilled
Till we face up to evil we thought we had killed?
Will we keep ignoring, averting our eyes
Or at long last put meaning behind all those cries
Of… Repeat Chorus 2x
"Arbeit macht frei"... 2x
Never again...
