It's Veterans' Day. Today I pay tribute to the ones who made this nation and the freedom it enjoys possible. To my older brother Damian John Leger (U. S. Army, Panama and Israel); my father's brother, John Ewell Leger (U.S. Army, Korean War, deceased); my friend [info]wcg (U.S. Marine Corps); my friend John Cochrane (U.S. Air Force); my sweet Songbird's nephew Jason Mulholland (U.S. Navy, Persian Gulf); and to all our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines (and let's not forget our Coast and National Guardsmen!) who serve on our territory and all over the world, who put themselves in harm's way daily to defend our lives and liberty and those of our allies, and most especially those who have given their lives in such service, I say a humble and heartfelt "thank you." May we and our nation be and remain worthy of your sacrifice, your strength and your courage.

My Dad and every one of my uncles served their country during WWII.
To that end, they would look at the crap we have gotten ourselves into and just had fits.
But when there was a real need to fight, the Belskys and Cappelsons served their country best.

Um, I thought Veteran's Day was tomorrow, not today?

Calendar-wise, the date (the 11th) is tomorrow. But since it's a Saturday and the fed-gov and bank employees are guaranteed a paid holiday, today is the official observance.

Ah, okay. I didn't know they did that with Veteran's Day and I'm kind of disappointed, although I concede their reasoning... one of the things that's always made this feel like an actual remembrance holiday for me, unlike Memorial Day, is that it's honored on a specific day rather than on whatever the convenient day-off-work might be.
