thatcrazycajun: (death)

Too many beloved actors from my favorite science-fiction TV shows are leaving us all of a sudden. On top of losing Doctor Who's Nick Courtney and Lis Sladen together in the last few weeks, now comes word that actor William Campbell, most famous for his portrayals of two roles in the original Star Trek series—the omnipotent god-child Trelane ("The Squire of Gothos") and the smarmy Klingon captain Koloth of "The Trouble with Tribbles" fame (whom he got to revisit in episodes of the later animated series and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) —has died at 84 following a long illness. He passed at California's Motion Picture & Television Country House & Hospital, where his fellow Trek vet DeForest Kelley spent his own last days before passing in 1999. TrekMovie.com reports the story and Bill's long and fruitful career here.

Bill showed fans a marvelous time at many conventions and personal appearances, and even joined Next Gen/Voyager actor John DeLancie in playing to the long-held fan suspicion (never officially confirmed) that Trelane was one of the Q in stage plays at cons. He was a delightful gentleman in person as well as a talented actor and will be sorely missed. Deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues and many fans, and thanks and a well-earned rest to him.
