My favorite quote from Dr. King, in my own layoutUnlike my sweetie the Songbird, who happens to be employed by the US federal government, I did not get a holiday today. I was at work trying real hard to make up for what will be a significantly lower week's paycheck than usual two days from now due to the recent winter storm.

But I have not forgotten the significance of this federal holiday, or the fact that it was first observed a quarter-century ago this month. And I sit wondering what I can still do in this late hour of the day to honor the man whose life and work is celebrated today, besides spreading his wisdom again online. This link gives you text, audio and video of his most famous speech...and although he was far from the only speaker on that hot August day in DC, nor was his oration anywhere near the longest (only 17 minutes!), he managed to say more than most politicians, pundits or preachers can with a whole hour or more to yap at us. And at left you can see my own favorite words of his besides that speech, in a graphic I designed several years ago.

Maybe the best way to honor his memory is to look inside myself for any sort of irrational prejudices that still linger from an upbringing in the same part of the country from which he came, and work harder to root them out and be closer to my best self towards others of whatever difference from myself. There may also be some other things that I can do here, today or the rest of the year. Any other suggestions for making the remainder of the day "a day on, not a day off," as someone once suggested, are welcome. And it probably wouldn't hurt for us all to remember him, and the contributions of others like him, beyond next month's Black History observances.

I don't think I've ever read the whole speech. Pretty amazing.

Why am I posting a like to stock market commentary? Because a sermon by Martin Luther King, Jr. appears at the end.
