I shame-facedly admit: I have done next to nothing this past few months to help stem the expected tsunami of anti-Democrat votes in today's elections. Didn't place one single phone call to a prospective voter, didn't knock on a single door, didn't donate a solitary dime. This was due partly to my own discouragement at the continuing predictions of GOPocalypse II today (and to being part of the liberal/urban minority in an overwhelmingly conservative and rural Southern state), and partly due to personal life issues crashing down on me and my Songbird, about which more in a later post.
So if RepubliCorp manages to take control of one or both houses of Congress back, as everybody with a pundit's license or a poll clipboard seems to predict, I will bear at least some share of the blame. Which is why I am now doing the only thing there's any time left to do, besides the obvious: beg, implore and beseech everyone reading this who agrees with me to get out and vote, if you haven't already. Hell, even if you disagree with me, get out and vote, so there can be as little questioning the validity of the results as possible. I'm on my way to do so this minute.
If you need further motivation, please read Newsweek's Jonathan Alter's cogent explanation of why disaffected Dems and libs should emphatically not sit this one out. Then read this:
"If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no candidates and no measures you want to vote for...but there are certain to be ones you want to vote against. In case of doubt, vote against; by this rule you will rarely go wrong. If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly intelligent exercise of franchise requires."
—Lazarus Long, transcribed by the late Robert A. Heinlein in Time Enough for Love, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1973
Be damned sure to bring a photo ID, voter registration card, passport and/or any other proof of your eligibility—particularly if you happen to be anything other than Caucasian, Christian and conservative. Do not let anyone steal your vote. If you need help finding or getting to your local polling place, get it here. Please help keep us moving forward, not stumbling backward.
