I have been reading about the fierce storm that ripped down trees and killed at least one person in New York, NY yesterday, and may have been a tornado or more than one. For those of you who haven't heard, here's one story from the paper I used to read each day when I lived there.

If you live in the city or thereabouts, I would appreciate your posting a quick note here to let me know you and yours are all right...or if the storm hit you, how badly. Thanks and love to all.

The radio last night did say it was 2 tornadoes that went thru the area. They are also saying around 1000 trees were destroyed in the storm.

From what I have seen, the NYC filk (and fanish) community is fine and was mostly unaffected (except for delayed travel.)

WCBS-AM reports that there were three tornados (two touched down in NYC, and one in one of those other states that borders us :-) plus a microburst and a macroburst (in which wind speeds were up to 150 mph). Lots of damage, but with all of that, only one fatality, which makes us supremely fortunate.

The worst of it missed us here; it struck perhaps a couple of miles east, and I was lucky enough not even to be delayed getting in to work. Many others were not as fortunate, being delayed by seven or eight hours getting home, or having to stay in Manhattan overnight.

Now, we return to Hurricane Igor watching...

As far as I know, everyone up here is okay. Myself, I missed it by seconds, literally, having just ducked into a store to buy some yogurt. I stayed until it had passed, then went on my way. It was very weird watching people larger than I used to be being literally blown along the street, though.

We're just inconvenienced. There are a lot of trees and branches down, some still blocking traffic. But otherwise we are fine.

It also allowed our rabbi to give a very interesting Yom Kippur sermon using the storm as a jumping off point.

Ohio had several tornadoes before that storm got to NYC, but i was in such a strong building that I didn't even notice one go by me.

Uptown it got dark for ten minutes, then it rained a lot, then went away. I saw how it hit Park Slope & Bed Stuy on TV. They're still talking about the Brooklyn clean-up.
