As it has apparently entered the public domain, I have found an instance on the Web of one of my favorite short stories from Great Literature, to which I was introduced by one of my later-grade-school English teachers: The Sculptor's Funeral, by Willa Cather. I felt a kinship with the story's dead protagonist, sculptor Harvey Merrick, as I came from a situation not entirely dissimilar to his, although probably not nearly as much talent was vouchsafed to me as to him. The tirade by Jim Laird, the drunkard lawyer, at the end is worth the time invested in the story all by itself.
So, what's your favorite non-SF/fantasy short story? By whom, and what did you like about it?
