As most who read this at all will likely know by now, I am to be Toastmaster for GAFilk 13 in five months and two days. If you know this, you probably also know that the gig entails doing a one-hour solo concert. (Of course, in my case, given that I still haven't learned to play an instrument and sing, no concert of mine is ever solo unless I'm forced to go it a capella. My Trained Pet Guitarist™, the one and only
gorgeousgary, has already committed to once again make up for my lack of skills in that area. And my beloved Songbird,
singing_phoenix, may well join me for a duet or two if I can coax her onstage.) Knowing myself to be a world-class procrastinator and that Gary needs time to rehearse anything we haven't done previously, I figure now's about the time I should start compiling my set list.
So here's my question: Given approximately 50 minutes or so to fill (assuming five on either end for setup/intro and teardown), should I only be performing my own compositions? Or would some of y'all prefer a mix of my own stuff and songs written (or parodied) by others? And if the latter, what songs by others do you have a hankering to hear mebutcher perform? For my own choice, if I'm doing stuff by anyone else, off the top of my pointy head I'm minded to include something by LJ's very own
filkertom, at least a couple of works by the legendary Frank "U. Scum" Hayes ("When I Was a Boy" or "Cosmos," anyone?), and perhaps some Oscar Brand, Stan Rogers and/or "Weird Al" Yankovic. Da Vinci's Notebook and/or Paul & Storm would no doubt find their way into the business as well ("Kingdom in the Sky" and "Nugget Man" have usually been well received).
Requests for any song(s) you enjoy hearing me do, or would like to—written and/or recorded by folks other than me—are hereby requested. Post here and please include a source for a recording of some sort if it's not something I'm likely to have heard (or heard of). Allowing for banter and the inevitable screwups onstage by moi, I'm guessing I'll need about 8-9 songs with at least two in reserve in case we run short time-wise.

Date: 2010-07-28 09:21 pm (UTC)I second Harold on "Evil is a Four Letter Word". Which I play at half the cons I attend anyway, so that's one easy rehearsal.
I always liked "Everyday Hero" (even if I still haven't seen Early Edition yet).
"The Living Chain" with
