This news brings the kind of sorrow that only someone who has been both a professional graphic artist/illustrator for two-thirds of his life and a comic-book fan practically from birth can possibly know: a giant of the industry, both on the page and behind the scenes, has gone from us this night. Comic Book Resources reports here that Dick Giordano, legendary artist and editor for both DC and Charlton Comics, has died at age 77 of as yet unreported causes.
Wikipedia's page on him contains more information on his life and work than I can possibly type here. For those familiar with his drawing, his inking, his editorial acumen and his famous "Meanwhile..." columns in the back of various DC titles during the '80s when he was Exec Editor of the House That Superman and Batman Built, no further explanation is necessary...and for those who are not, none can suffice to do him justice. By all accounts he was a genuinely decent, generous and professional man as well as a massively gifted talent who helped launch or burnish the careers of other greats including Neal Adams, Jim Aparo and many others.
As you used to sign off, "thank you and good afternoon," Dick...from an entire planet full of awed and grateful comics fans. Now I feel even more embarrassed never having even opened the drawing book/board kit you put out that I bought two years ago. Maybe it's finally time...
