thatcrazycajunIt is with great sadness that I must report the death of a man who not only had a broad career and genuine acting talent, but a buttload of moral courage as well. Few men would have dared, back in the days of black people getting beaten and fire-hosed for trying to vote and not getting to watch any TV show with dark-skinned stars on many southern stations, to sign up for co-starring in the first major-network drama series with an African-American lead. But Robert Culp took on the challenge, and with Bill Cosby made I Spy a bona-fide hit for NBC...and made television history besides.
Mr. Culp died yesterday at age 79 of a fall caused by cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles, CA home; a full report is here. Culp also shared the screen with William Katt as the Federal-agent partner of Katt's titular character in ABC's genre dramedy The Greatest American Hero, along with many other credits. Another interesting bit of trivia for SF/fantasy TV fans: he was briefly married in the 1970s to France Nuyen, AKA Elaan, the Dohlmen of Elas in the Star Trek episode "Elaan of Troyius."
