It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of a media great in the science-fiction genre. Dan O'Bannon, the screenwriter who was responsible for all or part of such films as the original Alien, Dark Star, Blue Thunder and Heavy Metal, has died of Crohn's disease at 63 on 17 December in Los Angeles, CA. Wikipedia has a full précis on his career here.

Alien scared the pee out of me as a 15-year-old when I sneaked into a midnight preview the day before it premiered in the fall of 1979 (I was then too young to get into a hard-R movie legally), and Dark Star made me just about pee myself again laughing when I caught it a couple years later at a convention. ("In the beginning, there was only darkness, and the universe was without form and void. And in addition to the darkness, there was also me."—Thermostellar Bomb #20). Dan's loss is a loss not only to his widow Diane Louise Lindley and son Adam, but to all of us who love this genre. Sleep sweet, sir, and thank you.
