CHRISTMAS FILK: It's Beginning to Look...
Dec. 23rd, 2009 05:02 pmThis song parody began writing itself on me after a few too many listens to the same damn five or six versions of the "secular carols" a local radio station plays nonstop, 24/7 through the entire month from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Parody Lyrics: Matt G. Leger
| It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Earlier each year; Halloween hasn't even passed, Much less Turkey Day's repast When carols in the marketplace you hear. Stores beginning to decorate for Christmas Clear on back to fall; It's when half their year's profits come So get set for "rum-pum-pum" All throughout the mall! Oh, you're not even trying To think about buying For all of the folks on your list, But the ads are reminding In fear you're not finding An uncle whose gift you have missed. | If a sales uptick Don't happen quick, Shareholders will be pissed! It's beginning to sound too much like Christmas; Ev'ry T.V. show Has commercials with kids in fleece And holiday melodies Before we've seen a single flake of snow! You're forgetting the reason why there's Christmas— It's not so you'll make dough, (Slowly) So if your store hangs one more wreath, I'll punch someone in the teeth... (Resume tempo) And to jail I'll go; Ho, ho, ho! (Spoken) See you in thirty days...Happy New Year! |

Date: 2009-12-24 04:40 am (UTC)I have a few Christmas pickles myself in my (Ir)religious and Seasonal department:
Each year as the Chri$tmas season approaches, I find the honest sentiments of many people, believers and otherwise, largely swamped by commercialism and, worst of all, too much Christmas music on the radio and in public places. For years I have immunized myself by writing contrarian carols, or "Christmas pickles".

Is that enough to tell you?
Who knew "Away in a Manger" was such a swinger?
Date: 2009-12-24 03:55 pm (UTC)1) the J. R. Murray tune starts high (in key of G, on the 2nd D above middle C, and comes down from there.
2) the W. J. Kirkpatrick tune starts low and lilts upward.
3) the James Spilman tune, "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton," starts low and then lilts up then down. Unlike the other tunes, there's a separate melody (or "B" part) for the 2nd verse and all even-numbered verses. This one is my favorite, since it was the one my family taught me originally.
Now that I've looked again at your text code, I think that I parse it to be Tune # 1.
(And I'm not even counting the song I'm playing with the church band at 7PM service tonight: Amy Grant's "Christmas Lullaby" was written to scan to "Away In a Manger" with yet another original tune.)
