Courtesy of StumbleUpon.com, a link to a learned academic's report on The 14 Characteristics of Fascism. Read the list carefully...and then ask yourself how many of them you recognize as happening or already having happened right here in the good old U.S. of A within the last five years or so. Answer honestly...and if you reach the conclusion I think you will—that any truthful, aware person must—please vote Democrat next week.

Laurence Britt is not a "learned academic", or indeed any sort of academic. He's a retired executive who now writes novels. That doesn't mean he's not capable of insight, but it does mean that his insights aren't entitled to any special privilege or a presumption that they're the result of careful research and objective thought. And the list he prepared is certainly not that. It's a random list of traits, none of which is actually characteristic of fascism in particular, or has much to do with fascism as a political theory. And it's based on a set of seven regimes that he chose to characterise as "fascist", not all of which had much in common with actual fascism; while ignoring regimes with much closer ties to actual fascism, such as Syria and Iraq.

Meanwhile, googling around, I came across this piece. The author, as far as I know, isn't an academic either — nor am I for that matter — but it accords with everything I know about fascism, and explains it very well, though at some considerable length. I recommend that you read it, despite the length.
