Thanks to the fact that this year US Independence Day falls on a Saturday, we are getting a paid holiday Friday where I work. In addition, since furloughs are still in effect (not that they've been sufficient to stave off layoffs, which was partly the original idea; the owners have still ended up giving at least three people lower down on the totem pole their pink slips since this latest round of four-day weeks began), I have an unpaid holiday Monday as well.

Thing is, the Songbird is still in Kenya for the time being (she is visiting the US for training, but not until the following weekend at the earliest), most of the events involving friends of mine are happening hundreds of miles away, and I haven't had word of any special doings around here for fannish types this weekend. So I'm looking for suggestions to keep me from simply spending July 3-6 in a semi-somnolent stupor. Ideas? Events? Anyone? Bueller??

Go to the forest preserve, drink a bundle of cheap booze, strip naked, glue leaves to your body and antlers to your head, then run through the trees shouting "I am the Forest Queen!" a the top of your lungs.

(...)

What? I think it's a good plan! ;-P

Alternatively take in a movie by yourself, cruise bookstores, or write/compose on the front porch. Endless things. :-)

You say "semi-somnolent stupor" as if it's a bad thing...

Is InConjunction too far away?

About as far, in a slightly different direction:
on July 5th, Kathy Mar will be in Columbus, OH:

REST . . . TWO . . . THREE . . . FOUR . . . or else I'll kidnap you to come join my sister's family this weekend if we're doing anything in Flowery Branch.

I'm afraid we don't have much to offer. I'm just getting over a nasty virus, and ACat looks to be possibly coming down with it. For safety's sake, we're likely to hermit. Sorry! If that changes, I will certainly let you know.

I always read these things too late. You should've emailed or called; you could've come to the Georgia Independence Day Festival with us. It's down near Signe's house, so you could've carpooled with us. For $5, it was one of the best bargains in town, with 3 of the best RenFaire bands around [Three Quarter Ale, Ten Penny Travelers, & Mickle-A-Do], plus a small military history museum, Native American dancers, etc. The catch was, we went on Friday, to avoid large crowds. We got there at 3, when stuff started, so, after 3 hours or so, we'd seen & done everything we wanted to do & came home early. Ze spouse says, next year, we should go later, & stay for the fireworks. If you're in town, you should come with us.
