thatcrazycajunIf it's May, it's time for another album of musical parody from the world's preeminent musical political satire troupe, The Capitol Steps. Since the year I graduated high school (1981), this motley collection of present and former staff of members of the US Congress has been singing silly songs about politics and current events through five Presidential administrations, 14 Congresses, 28 albums (first on vinyl, then later on compact disc) and two venues (the late, lamented Chelsea's of Georgetown, then the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center). Their quarterly radio specials on NPR are appointment listening, and their occasional PBS TV specials equally unmissable; and video of their shows has now even made it to YouTube.
Their 29th collection of songs from their live show, Obama Mia!, is now available. It features such gems as "I Wrecked My Heart with Spam & Crisco," "Help Me, Honda," the title track and an all-new version of the Spooneristic soliloquy "Lirty Dies," originated by the late Steps director and co-founder Bill Strauss. You can preview some of the tracks on the Steps' website for free, and peruse the rest of their back catalogue as well as find out when they may be heading your way. I'm a longtime fan, and so is the Songbird...and if you aren't already, I predict you will be once you hear this.
