Back to a five-day workweek already!
Apr. 24th, 2009 06:34 pmSome of you may recall about three weeks ago, I posted here that my employer had announced a plan to reduce all staff to four days of work each week until further notice, staggering the days off by seniority. This was designed to bring about the reduction in payroll costs that the sharp decline in incoming work (and thus revenue) was making a dire necessity, without ordering outright layoffs.
Today, my supervisor came out of the daily morning foremen's (department heads') meeting to inform us that business has picked up sufficiently that the fourth week of furloughs, originally scheduled for this coming week, has been canceled. We all get to go back to a full work week starting Monday. (Wouldn't you know this happens right around the time I finally get my turn at a three-day weekend?) But in all seriousness, I'd much rather have the pay than the unpaid time off—especially since I so far have had a great deal of trouble making these days off productive.
Going forward, word is the four-day week may be reinstated, but only on a week-by-week, department-by-department basis. We're by no means out of the economic woods yet...but the first rays of sunlight do seem to be peeking through the canopy.
