Just caught the new animated Hellboy movie, Hellboy: Sword of Storms, on Cartoon Network's Toonami anime block. Ron Perlman (best known as Vincent in the CBS series Beauty and the Beast) voices the title role, which he played in 2004's live-action film, and Selma Blair and Doug Jones also reprise their big-screen roles as pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and water-breathing Abe Sapien, respectively. Peri Gilpin joins the cast as a new BPRD agent, Prof. Kate Corrigan. Wikipedia says that this is one of two new animated Hellboy films, the second scheduled for airing next year and both destined for the DVD shelves shortly.

This film, even though it's not the live-action Hellboy 2 wer'e all waiting for (and which I hear is coming), still kicks metric buttloads of ass in artwork, characterization, plotting and action sequences. More than this I cannot say without getting into serious spoiler territory; if you really want to know more, see the Wikipedia page. CN will probably air it again; I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of the original Dark Horse comic by Mike Mignola (who had a hand in writing all the live and cartoon flicks).

Wasn't that fun? Fortunately, I had seen the movie on cable, & so knew the characters.

The movie was very well-done; if it were a weekly series, I'd definitely watch it. If you find out about the second movie, be sure to let me know. I found out about the first one from the ASFS mailing list [you know, the one you need to be on ;)]; it's a good source for general sf & fannish news & activities of local groups.
