Out-and-proud bisexual comedienne Margaret Cho has come a long way since that failed ABC sitcom in which she made the mistake of agreeing to star. During the dark days of the eight-year Junior Bush Régime, she was one of the angriest front-line humor guerrilla fighters, basing whole books and stand-up acts on that Presidency's homophobic, tyrannical excesses. Now she's actively working to become a musical comedienne, following the example of fellow comics such as Tim Cavanagh, Bob Ricci, Judy Tenuta and our very own [livejournal.com profile] singingpatient.

She's now composing her first musical album on CD, to be titled Guitarded and released sometime next year. She's working with some fairly well-known names on songs for it, including Amanda Palmer, Tegan & Sara, Patty Griffin (not to be confused with Kathy Griffin of My Life on the D-List fame), Jon Brion and Grant Lee Phillips. And what makes it really interesting is that, since Margaret has her very own blog and a Facebook page and Twitter account besides, she's letting her fans watch as she puts the CD together, commenting on the process and making initial recordings of the songs available for free download.

The first one, sadly, will probably never get airtime even on Dr. Demento's show without significant bleeping: it's titled "Eat Shit and Die." If you're not familiar with her previous spoken comedy material (and if not, you owe yourself a treat), it'll give you a pretty good idea of what to expect; she's queer-positive, highly sexed, definitely not "family friendly" and funny as all hell. There's a YouTube video of her singing it on her blog page if you scroll down a bit, and if you sign up for her e-mail list you get the free MP3s. (The Doc is on Facebook too, under his real legal name; bonus points for you if you can find him without using Google or Wikipedia. Hint: he's on my friends list.) I for one can't wait to hear what finally drops when Maggie gets the whole thing down on plastic.
