Snow. In Atlanta. In the deep South. We were warned it might happen, but I didn't think it really would after yesterday came and went with only gobs of rain.

But now big, wet white flakes are falling by the hundreds outside my door.

Guess I won't be going anywhere today either.

snow is pretty, if you don't HAVE to go anywhere.

I've been in Atlanta 3 times, and it snowed one of those times, so I just don't think of snow in Atlanta as unusual.

They're talking about 6-10 inches here, which will make it the biggest snow we've had since Feb.11th 2006 or thereabouts. I'm pulling for 10 inches in the hope it triggers a Federal Code Red, and I get paid for staying home.

OTOH, the Rockville Metro parking lot doesn't have anywhere to put 10 inches of snow, other than plowing under a bunch of spaces. If we get that much, I may have to get my ass out the door at least 15 minutes earlier than usual for several days after the storm to make sure I can still get a space.

Last time we had a big snow, the first day after I got the very last possible space in the lot. (Usually, there are still 20 or so left). The next day, I planted the nose of my car into the snowbank half-covering a space, since again it was the only option. (Other than the more expensive garages across the street...)

You haven't been to Atlanta lately, have you?

Actually, I was just there for a business trip.

But yes, I do know how the Southeast reacts to snow. (Having survived the Sled Dog Musicon.)

We got some snow here in central Arkansas late-afternoon / overnight, and it was cold enough for it to stick until quite a while after sunrise. No real depth; just kind of crystals trapped in the grass clumps. It didn't stick on pavement at all; it's been too warm too recently.

Today is a good day to live so far south that it's "really" the north. (Apologies for the smugness).

On the other hand, if I *did* live in the deep snow, as long as my power worked at home, it wouldn't mean a day off of work, since I work from home.

I have seen Atlanta with snow. And the drivers floundering helplessly. Actually, more so the cars, sliding helplessly, down the icy hills. Stay inside, and keep with you all the living or dentable items that are yours, that you can get under cover.

Back in the early 1980's, I came down to the great midwinter Poultry Conference with Alan, as a college ag club representative, from the snowy wilds of Michigan. On the day we left Atlanta, snow fell, and we watched the vehicles around us fail to maintain lanes. Despite the fact that we were heading back NORTH into MORE snow and ice (and in a 15-passenger van, as I recall), I felt safer, because I was headed back to where the drivers had had more practice in this stuff.
