SPOILER ALERT: DON'T read this if you haven't yet viewed the Doctor Who Confidential episode (either by download or on BBC America at some point) that releases this information and want to wait until then!

BBC Wales have finally announced their selection of an actor to succeed the hugely popular Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, when he leaves the revived Doctor Who at the end of this year. The new guy (yes, guy; sorry, all you pervs who were hoping for a female Doctor!) is named Matt Smith; some background on him is in this article, and the official Beeb news report and a video of his reaction to being awarded one of British television's most iconic roles appear here.

Soooo...discuss. Opinions? Anyone seen the bastich in anything prior to this? Me, I never hoida da bum...but then, I'm a Yank and we don't always get word of the hot new Brit actors in whatchacall a timely fashion over on this side of the pond. But I note that Smith is the youngest actor ever cast in the role (retiring Peter Davison's long-standing record at last) and figure that at least he oughta be able to hang around awhile. And I trust Stephen Moffat, the new Who honcho taking over from the departing (and newly knighted) Sir Russell T. Davies, OBE. So I'm hopeful, and somewhat proud being a Matt myself; in any case, tradition dictates that the show must go on.

Bad, BAD pun!

Arty sez he's already got a rep with both the Beeb and West End. That and I trust the Beeb to get it right, after all these years...

BBC News reports Davies' knighting here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7754540.stm); the link is right off the page with Smith's announcement, on the right-hand side. It was one of many new knighthoods on the 2009 Honours List, put out by Buckingham Palace each year around this time (Ian McKellen also got one).

That's what I get for relying on what someone else posted. You are correct, and I apologize to both you and Sir Ian.

actually I read the report on the BBC news site a few minutes ago.

I swear The Doctor has been getting younger with each progressive incarnation! Or looking younger, at any rate.
