Home with family, reporting late
Dec. 26th, 2008 06:37 pmIn case anyone reading this journal regularly has noted the absence of postings since Tuesday and been concerned for my or the Songbird's safety, please rest assured we are whole and unharmed (if extremely tired). We did have a considerable delay leaving Atlanta for our planned drive to Louisiana on Wednesday, due to SB's having a rather serious work-related bureaucratic fire to at least attempt putting out before close of business Christmas Eve; and we also encountered monsoon-level thunderstorms driving southward through Alabama from Montgomery to Mobile.
Between the torrential rains (which in spots necessitated slowing our speed to 40 miles per and turning flashers on, so poor were road conditions and visibility) and the pea-soup coastal fog which covered most of Interstates 10 and 12 westward from Mobile, we did not arrive in Lafayette, LA until half past midnight Wednesday (causing SB to miss her traditional Christmas Eve midnight mass for only the second time in two decades; she was not a happy churchmouse...and Your Humble Correspondent wasn't too jolly himself after 12 solid hours of driving).
Since then, we have been spending time with my family, most of whom live in homes without wireless Net access. Today is the first chance we have actually had to spend significant time in a place with WiFi to update this journal and do our respective chores requiring the Net. We hope that everyone has enjoyed their holiday week, whether or not the (traditionally observed, if not factually chronological) birth of Christ is the holiday you celebrate at this time of year.
Most of my familial duties now being discharged, our plan is to leave Lafayette tomorrow and spend a very brief amount of time in New Orleans (probably not enough for socializing, alas) before driving as far east as we can manage that evening and hoteling it overnight. We expect to complete the trip back to Atlanta by Sunday night. SB will spend New Year's Eve with me in Atlanta and then fly north to visit her family for the ensuing first weekend of 2009.
What's been doing in your neck of the woods while we've been dreaming of a wet Christmas? Post here.
