We all know the songs that get played on radio stations and retail-store PA systems incessantly this time of year. As an antidote to yet another cheesy version of "Winter Wonderland," here (with a little help from YouTube) are some of the holiday chestnuts I like to listen to, one for each of the 12 days:
- "The 12 Pains of Christmas"—Bob Rivers Comedy Corp. (now Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio)
- "The Night Santa Went Crazy"—Weird Al Yankovic (warning: rather violent and gory)
- "Ding! Fries Are Done"—Billy (no other name given) in a culinary parody of "Carol of the Bells"
- "The Christmas Song"—Billy Crystal, in persona as about 10 of his most famous characters
- "The 12 Canadian Days of Christmas"—Rick Moranis & Dave Thomas, in persona as Bob & Doug McKenzie
- "Santa Claus Is Watching You"—Ray Stevens performing one of his all-time demented classics
- "Santa Got A D.W.I."—Ray's country-music colleague Sherwin Linton
- "The Chanukah Song, Part 3"—Adam Sandler, in a surprise holiday-season appearance on Saturday Night Live a couple years back, following up on his two earlier versions of this funny celebrity-filled song
- "Christmas Is Pain"—Roy Zimmerman, who has a YouTube channel of his very own to which you can subscribe
- "The All-Purpose Carol"—an ecumenical holiday song originated by John Forster, performed by Biddie & Chris Marshall (complete with on-screen lyrics so you can sing along!)
- "Silent Night"—Richard Cheese, from his lounge-themed holiday CD Silent Nightclub
- "Christmas Is Interesting"—by our very own Jonathan Coulton

I'm a fan of Walt Kelly's alternative Christmas lyrics from the comic strip "Pogo". Deck us all with Boston Charlie!

Date: 2008-12-22 10:05 pm (UTC)The Whos' song you mention from the Grinch special isn't, strictly speaking, a silly holiday song; it's actually quite seriously meant and uplifting, which is why it was not included.
And as for the one about the three kings and the rubber cigar, that's a new one on me; I have no Earthly idea which song you mean.
