Are you starting to hear them? At the entrance to your local big-box store, on the sidewalk corner in the city, in front of some government building? The bells. You know the ones I mean—the ones being rung by uniformed folks or aproned temps or even costumed Santas, with a big black kettle next to them and a sign bearing the logo of The Salvation Army.

Before you consider dropping some of your hard-earned into that kettle, read this LJ post from three years ago by a friend of [livejournal.com profile] ladyqkat's which she has re-linked on her own page. And think how angry you are, if you see things as I do, about all the churches and other religious-based organizations working to deny marriage equality, adoption equality, open military service and other basic civil rights to our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered brethren and sistren. Guess what? Those folks with the bells and the kettles are part of one such group.

Then download the rather clever image this guy has put together, print yourself up a few copies and have 'em with you next time you pass one of these noisy minions of the religious right. Drop one of these in the kettle instead of actual cash and maybe at least a few of the temps, if not members of the organization itself, will get the message and rethink their involvement with a group seeking to ruin the lives of people they've never even met in the name of God.

Even if they don't, it ought to at least give you some small bit of satisfaction in having a non-violent way of responding to the annual annoyance.

I would suggest only doing this when no one is watching. Otherwise, people might see you giving them the fake bill and actually give them real money.

I've done this in the past, but don't know if it's helped. Still, I'll keep trying.
