Happy birthday to a really neat lady, [livejournal.com profile] jhayman!

Not much to report today, although we did have an interesting morning when we went out to the beach and discovered the tide out a full quarter-mile from shore, leaving lots of the close-in coral floor of the shoreline exposed, large rocks that had been mini-islands just off shore now standing on somewhat-dry land and poor, luckless crabs and other critters flopping and crawling around in tidal pools. We braved the water hazards and the accosting "beach boys" (local scam artists, would-be entrepreneurs and beggars looking to mooch a few shillings off the tourist trade) to explore them at the Songbird's request; she enjoyed tidal pools as a child, and still looks endearingly childlike watching a crab scuttle from one pool to another. Pictures to follow.

Our plans to go out driving around the area came a cropper when our driver failed to show at his expected arrival time and the group of people from SB's Nairobi CDC office showed up just in time for the last half-hour of lunch buffet. We made it barely soon enough, and so did they; and we all lunched and chatted for a couple hours, then went out to the beach again. The tide had come in by this time, and we actually found a stretch of beach not covered in seaweed where we could do a little wading. While we wandered the beach, Francis finally called in and assuaged SB's worries of disaster: seems he'd been trying since 7 AM to drive out our way and only got as far as Mombasa, thanks to radiator trouble in the SUV and heavy traffic. We arranged with him that he would find himself a motel room there and drive the two remaining hours to our location tomorrow. Then we had a few minutes of full immersion in the hotel pool before it closed for the evening. Dinner was had with the office folks and their adorable children (most adopted from Ethiopia), then an hour for me to post this before bed.

I'm at the point in Barack Obama's book (Dreams From My Father) where he visits Kenya. I'm sorry that Kenya's problems seem only to have worsened since then (1988).

Please travel safely. Obama mentions three serious vehicular accidents that affected his Kenyan relatives.
