thatcrazycajunGrey's Anatomy returned for its fifth season tonight on ABC with a double-length season premiere, and Oh. My. Fucking. GAWD. One of the more intense evenings I've spent watching television, for certain.
A trio of husband-wife accident traumas all come into Seattle Grace Hospital's ER just as the staff is reeling from their hospital having been demoted to 12th in a national ranking of teaching hospitals...so Chief Webber and his surgeons have something to prove. And oh, mama, do they ever prove it. Bernadette Peters guest stars as one of the injured wives (can you believe this woman is 60 years old? I can't) who discovers that her even more seriously injured husband has committed adultery with her best friend. Mariette Hartley plays the third wife, whose brain injury causes her memory to "reset" every 30 seconds. (And I can't believe she's 68, either! Zarabeth, we hardly knew ye.) If both of these actresses don't walk off next year's prime-time Emmycast with statuettes, someone needs to be horsewhipped.
Poor Meredith is trying to decide whether she and Derek can truly be happy together, once and for all, forever...and seeing a marriage of decades crack up in her own ward does not help matters. A hunky young US Army surgeon who performs an emergency field tracheotomy with a pen barrel impresses the hell out of the staff—most especially Dr. Yang, who has been alone since Isaiah Washington upfucked his way off the show and took his character, Yang's boyfriend Burke, with him. Dr. Torres has to deal with both managing a risky experimental procedure she barely understands and the prospect of entering into a lesbian relationship with Dr. Hahn. And other couples among the surgical staff deal with the fallout from their various personal peccadillos even as they struggle to raise their professional game. And that's not even mentioning the shocker or three that come in the second hour.
And we have to wait a full two weeks for the next episode. Sigh. Oh, well, at least they gave us a double shot tonight to tide us over.
