SPOILER WARNING: do not look behind the cut if you have not yet watched last night's season premiere of NBC's Heroes (long awaited after last spring's mid-season case of writers'-strikus interruptus) and don't want your enjoyment ruined by advance knowledge. (Don't read this week's TV Guide, either; it has a seriously spoilerific cover story on the two eps aired last night.)

Well, series creator Tim Kring promised to make it all up to us for what many considered a major let-down of a sophomore season, and judging by "The Second Coming" and "The Butterfly Effect" he certainly has made a good start. In the TV Guide article, he was quoted as saying he deliberately wanted to adrenalize the storyline this time, letting drop surprises in the first two eps he would have let wait for eps 7 or 8 of previous seasons. (In keeping, perhaps, with the discovery by Mohinder in ep1 that the powers come not from blood, but adrenaline.) And as he no doubt intended, all the revelations coming thick and fast only spur even more questions:
  • Am I the only one who desperately wants to see Angela Petrelli killed off Real Soon Now? As if we didn't already have evidence enough that the woman is a mean-assed, scheming, megalomaniacal harpy, now we learn she's Sylar's real mother! That poisoned apple sure as hell didn't fall far from the tree... (But then, who was that poor woman played by Ellen Greene that we saw him call "Mom" and ruthlessly slaughter a couple seasons back? A surrogate parent, like Claire's adoptive dad Noah? And why was Gabe/Sylar placed with her?) This vicious cunt needs to get whacked, and even more urgently now that she's seized control of the Company. And I can't wait to see what Nate and Pete's reaction is when they find out that the man who's caused them the most grief and bloodshed is in fact a blood relation of theirs. (Full bro or half? Reportedly Mama P's supposedly-dead husband, Nate and Pete's dad, is slated to appear in a soon-to-air episode, so maybe he'll reveal the answer.)
  • If Future Pete Petrelli time-warped back into Present-Day Pete's body and shunted Present Pete's mind into Jesse Murphy's body back in Level 5 of Company HQ, where did poor Jesse's mind go? Is Present Pete's consciousness sitting on top of his in the same brain, or has Jesse been essentially killed?
  • That scene with Sylar causally chatting with poor Claire while he sits next to her, lying on the sofa with her skull cut open and her pulsing brain exposed for him to mess with? Creepy beyond the capacity of the word to convey. And now that the psychotic bastard has Claire's healing powers, everyone else with powers in the world is well and truly fucked...not to mention anyone trying to stop him.
  • How about our old pal Bruce "Capt. Sheridan" Boxleitner as New York's fictional Governor? He looks positively Clintonesque with white hair and the B5 goatee shaved off. (Which party is he in, I wonder? And which one is Nate in, for that matter?) Hope we get to see more of him in this series. And is the Kringmeister slipping us a sly comment on the recent sex scandal involving a real NY state governor by showing Malden in a hotel-room tryst with his new adviser, an apparently amnesiac (and resurrected) Niki? And is the Guv married?
  • Why the heck couldn't Hiro simply go a few hours back in time and stop himself from opening the damn safe to keep the formula from being stolen? Because of his vow never again to travel into the past? Seems like the simplest solution to me—certainly cheaper, safer and easier than bringing in private dicks to track down Kid Flashette. (Her portrayer notes in TV Guide that the character is both "annoyed and intrigued" by Hiro. Whaddaya wanna bet she and our favorite samurai time-bender end up doing the nasty within another two or three eps?)
  • Niki/Tracy's flash-freezing the nosy reporter (always nice to see Bill Katt get work again!) surely must have been recorded by security cameras in that parking garage. Even if it was accidental (and from her reaction, it seems so), how much you wanna bet someone is gonna come to her with a blackmail threat to send that tape to the cops? And did what was left of him still have her fingerprints on it?

If you've already seen the first two eps, post your comments here. Or post after you do see them.

Glad we weren't the only ones who noticed the resemblance between the 'ol Captain and a certain former president. 8-)

(It's even more pronounced than it was in B5 days. I noticed it then too...)

No - I noticed it immediately. :) Though...OMG, that was Bruce Boxleitner? THAT didn't cross my consciousness - doh!

And you know...after two "loves and losses", it sure would nice to see Hiro get the girl. :)

And yeah, Claire talking with her head open trumped her waking up mid autopsy (which had my vote for creepiest scene up to that point).

We loved it - can't WAIT for next week (though it was weird watching it with commercials, since we only started watching Heroes a couple of months ago, watching both seasons on DVD).

There's always been an implication that Nathan is a Republican, since that would explain why he faced such an uphill battle in the election in NYC. He is also in many ways a Giuliani analogue. It would follow that Governor Malden is also from the GOP, especially since no Democrat in this state has ever worried about the religious right.

They will bring new meaning to the term "having a 'quickie'".

Reminds me of the comment that the Flash's moniker of "The Fastest Man Alive" is not necessarily something one would wish to advertise....

And again it was my lovely wife who had the killer observation about Claire.

Last year she asked if her hymen would regenerate every time she had sex.

This year, when her Mom was asking if Sylar had
....(silence)....
Claire should have answered.

"No Mom, he's not interested in my body. He wanted me for my mind."

Once again someone flashes to the future and sees a major city in some sort of apocalyptic state (at least it's not NYC this time) and this somehow has to be stopped. The recycling's getting tiresome.

At least there's bad guys who aren't Sylar this time.

I don't have high hopes for this season, but I'll check it out for a bit to see how it goes.
