Well, the hair is a lot less long & red these days. *g* In fact, when I ran into the late Joanie Winston at a con for the first time in at least a decade, I opened the conversation with "You probably don't remember me, but.." She interrupted to say sure she did, but "Didn't you used to be a redhead?"

*My* talent for filk writing? Of the two of us, mister, you're the one with the Pegasus.

I bought my 6-string guitar and a couple teach-yourself books in 1980 and slowly taught myself the basics. Lessons would have been useful; I sometimes think of taking some even now but given how little I can play anymore there's really not much point.

Re the "more sci-fi than Sci Fi" icon: I've got mixed feelings about that one. On the one hand it's both snarky & true; on the other, I'm one of those aging curmudgeons who insists that anyone who calls it that instead of SF immediately establishes that they don't know what they're talking about. Which has in fact been true of the Skiffy Channel for most of its life.

Huh. My first fandom actually was (and remains) STAR TREK, but DW would have to be a close second. (I came in during the Tom Baker era, so he's my fave Doctor, with Pete Davison right after.)

I have a drawl? And after I spent so many years of childhood trying to imitate the flat Midwestern tones of TV announcers...all for naught.

Ditto and ditto. Except that I never really warmed to Davison. Not his fault; the mostly unlikeable companions and general decline in script quality had a lot to do with it.

And Tom is still my fave too, though Tennant is gaining fast.

It's been a while so I really can't remember, but I thought for some reason that you had friended me first, and for the life of me I didn't know why. It wasn't like we'd ever met or anything. If I did friend you first, it was no doubt because you said something I thought was witty and insightful on the Filk group and I decided this was someone worth reading. But it's been a while. Who can remember?

Intelligence -- thank you! Some days I feel more intelligent than others, of course.

Musical instruments -- At one time or another in my life I have probably either owned or played about two dozen instruments, of every major instrumental group except brass (never could get the hang of the mouthpiece). The instrments range from the familiar (violin, clarinet, guitar, blues harp) to the slightly less popular (banjo, tin whistle, recorder, ukulele, baritone uke) to the downright oddball (bowed psaltry, kalimba and khaen -- a Laotian mouth organ). Lately I've spent most of my time on the banjo because I figure after mumbledy-ump years doing music, I ought to get good at playing at least one instrument.

Eventually I may get the poll up on my LJ. I don't update it as often as I should.

I have a lot of formal art training but where art is concerned that can be overrated. Some of my best work was self taught. My charcoal drawings were inspired by an artist friend of mine who worked as a guard at the art museum when I worked there. My long ago pencil drawings totally evolved in isolation. Anything I've done with paint comes from my education. My partner Cal only finished one semester of art school and is one of the most creative artists I know - he breaks all the "rules" and has been rewarded all his life for that!

One of my favorite recipes from my Cajun roots? Well, you have to understand I'm the black sheep of a Cajun family: I'm a recovering Catholic, I can't speak French worth a damn and I hate cooking. That said, I do have a recipe learned from my dad for what most people call French toast. In Lafayette and environs, we call it "lost bread" (or in French, pain perdu) because historically it was usually made from leftover day-old bread before throwing the remains of the old loaf out and baking or buying a new one.

• Crack two eggs and scramble thoroughly (the mixture should foam a little).


• Blend in a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a couple tablespoons of sugar.


• Soak 2-4 slices of standard sandwich bread in the resulting mixture to saturation. Be sure to flip and coat each side.


• Fry both sides of each soaked slice in a greased skillet over medium heat until golden brown.


• Serve hot with syrup or honey. For serving more than two people, double quantities as appropriate.

Writer H. Allen Smith, writing about his childhood in the Little Egypt section of Illinois, said when they were kids they used to call this concoction "aig bread." As in, bread dipt in aig and then frod. I'm glad to see someone besides me adds venilla -- I think it makes it taste that much better. We also like serving our French toast/pain perdu/aig bread with whipped cream and fresh berries when they're in season. Blueberry season is only just ending here in the Pacific Northwest, and it's a shame.
