I bear sad news for all lovers of topical comedy. The Royal Canadian Air Farce, a comedy troupe out of CBC studios which has been a mainstay of that network's radio and TV schedules (and of The Dr. Demento Show here in the States, in excerpts from their albums) for 3.5 decades, has decided to end its weekly show for good this coming December. Various media outlets have reported on the decision, saying that the troupe's founders plead tiredness of aging bones and scarcity of time for themselves in the weekly grind of producing broadcast content. "In comedy, timing is everything," the gang says on their website, "and knowing when to make your exit is a big part of that."
If you can't get CBC where you are, the RCAF have made all of their recorded collections available for listening free via RealPlayer files on the site. If you haven't heard these hilarious folks make fun of everyone from Canadian prime ministers to global celebrities, or just the oddities of Canuck culture, you owe it to yourself to check out such classic sketches as "PMS Airlines," "Quebec Language Police," "Hockey Talk" and "Grocer Dave's Green Products." These guys can write and perform rings around Saturday Night Live's people any day of the week and twice on Sunday...trust me on this one.
The Farceurs plan to end their on-air career as they began it, with a New Year's Eve special. It's a tough call choosing them or the Capitol Steps, who have their own radio show that same night...but you can always download the latter afterward.
