Summer movie checklist: the penultimate update

As of the last movie-watching weekend of the summer, since next weekend is all Dragon*Con, all the time:

May
02: Iron Man (Two thumbs way up!)
09: Speed Racer (Not great, but not bad.)
16: Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Two thumbs up.)
22: Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (And two more.)
30: Sex and the City (The Songbird and I both enjoyed it, which is highly unusual for a "chick flick.")

June
06: Kung Fu Panda (Still haven't seen it. Waiting for it to turn up on cable On Demand and/or DVD.)
13: The Incredible Hulk (Meh. One thumb up.)
20: Get Smart (Two thumbs for this one.)
27: WALL*E (This one is visually amazing and overall enchanting. Two thumbs and a big toe way up!)

July
02: Hancock (Another wait-for-cable-or-DVD choice.)
11: Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Another double-thumb-up one. Even if you aren't a fan of the original comic, you'll love it.)
      Meet Dave (This one goes to cable too.)
      Journey to the Center of the Earth (3D) (Has at least one major plot hole in it...but still fun.)
18: The Dark Knight (Go see this one too. Twice.)
      Space Chimps (CGI cartoon. Waiting for the disc on this one, too.)
25: The X-Files: I Want to Believe (Okay, but leaves you wondering about stuff you missed if you didn't watch the TV show's final season.)

August
01: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Fun if you can buy Brendan Fraser as the father of a college-age archeology student.)
08: Fly Me to the Moon (3D) (Just saw it today; silly, but fun. And the real Buzz Aldrin has a cameo.)
15: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Saw it last week. Memo to George Lucas: Please stop ruining your own creation. Thank you.)
29: Babylon A.D. (Probably will see this one after Labor Day.)

We saw the flick of the summer on Friday night. Man On Wire, the story of Philippe Petit walking between the towers of the World Trade Center. A BBC documentary, it was good to see the degree of planning that went into the event, the number of ways things could have (and did, in small ways) go wrong, both before and after, and how it ultimately became the spectacular feat we now look back on.

I'm always amused by the fact that getting the cable across the gap was accomplished in such a cliched fashion (an arrow carrying fishing line/monofilament tied to string tied to cord tied to rope tied to the cable). And amazed that it went as well as it did.

I just wish they'd given us more footage of the actual walk, and fewer shots of the towers with airplanes in the frame (really!).

Wall*E lost me when Number Five failed to be incinerated, twice, in the first fifteen minutes (when the rocket used him as a landing pad, then for launch).

I've only seen Iron Man and Indiana Jones. The only one I want to see is Dark Knight.
