Warts and all, it's still the best place in the world to live, and anyone lucky enough to be born here needs to never forget that they have basically won the genetic lottery. On this date in 1776, the members of the Second Continental Congress signed their names to the Declaration of Independence...and carved them into history.
Let us celebrate the wonders of our land, the ideals of our founding and the many good things our nation has produced...and work to make her the best that she can possibly be—especially in this Presidential election year.
Woman, to Ben Franklin as he exited Independence Hall: "Well, Dr. Franklin, what have we got, a monarchy or a republic?"
Franklin: "A republic, madam...if you can keep it."
