The U.N. gets a new head honcho
Oct. 12th, 2006 11:10 amAnti-United Nations U.S. conservatives (is that a redundancy?) will have a new whipping boy come the first of the year: Reuters reports here that a South Korean, Ban Ki-Moon, will get the nod this Friday from the U.N. General Assembly to take over as Secretary General from the embattled incumbent, Ghana's Kofi Annan, effective 1 January 2007. He will be the first Asian to hold the post since U Thant of blessed memory.
Your Humble Correspondent congratulates the new SecGen-elect...and wishes him better luck getting a handle on the internal disarray and corruption at U.N. Plaza than his predecessor has had. But given the infuriation on the right here at the august body's allowing Argentinian President Hugo Chavez to literally demonize our Maximum Leader on the Assembly podium recently, it is highly unlikely that Ki-Moon will get much of a honeymoon.
