On Father's Day 2008
Jun. 15th, 2008 03:53 pmNational Airport, Arlington, VA, 4:11 PM: Heading home after finally getting to see the Songbird in DC (she picked me up at the National Airport terminal around 11:30 Friday night), I reflect on the father I left behind in Louisiana (still going at 72 and able to make a piece of wood do just about everything but sit up and beg), as well as on the other fathers in my life.
My younger brother Doug is now a captain in the Lafayette Fire Dept., a successful landlord and a father of four, the youngest being his five-year-old daughter. Elder brother Damian is now on his second marriage and both his kids are grown and gone, one married. Then there's my stepmom's son Bob, father of two, and my parrain (that's Cajun for "godfather"), Daddy's older brother Hubert Jr., now his only surviving sibling. And my late mother's brother-in-law John, and my stepfather John Holder, father of two of his own from a prior marriage, living in east Texas. And my Songbird's brother John and brother-in-law Darren, who shared two of his daughters' ballet recital with us this weekend.
And of course, all the nifty dads on my friend list here:
mrpsyklops,
darrenzieger,
wcg,
redaxe, brand-new dad
abovenyquist,
filkerdave,
tarkrai,
bedlamhouse,
osewalrus,
billroper,
wormquartet,
edstauff,
filker0,
fringefan,
jrittenhouse,
jslove,
mikestruffles,
thnidu and any others I've only left off because I'm not sure whether they actually have kids.
To all the above, I wish a peaceful and happy Father's Day. And especial condolences to Timothy J. "Big Russ" Russert Sr., who lost his son Tim Jr. two days ago.
