Today I went to the Atlanta Municipal Traffic Court for my scheduled hearing on last March's fender-bender near work, where things went pretty much as I expected. After a clerk delivered a brief lecture on rights and procedures to the group of us, the judge came in and started moving through the cases pretty briskly. I ended up getting out only about 90 minutes and two Benjamins in fines and court fees later.

(Side note: Fulton County's courts are way more high-tech than next-door DeKalb County's, where I last went to traffic court. They actually had LCD wallboards in the lobby like airports do, listing everyone scheduled for a hearing by name and which courtroom they needed to be in at what time. And the judge had a terminal right in front of him on the bench...though one wonders why they didn't install the monitor flat on his desk below him, rather than upright and blocking his face from the rest of the courtroom. He input each case's info, verdict and fine right into the system, which means it went directly to the cashier downstairs—no paperwork needed. Yay for the "semi-paperless" court!)

And when I grabbed a quick excuse for lunch at Mickey D's and reported to work, I was told by my supervisor upon walking in that I had actually accumulated a few paid vacation days already, despite having only been on the job less than six months. She advised me that I could either work the remaining 2.5 hours of the day and be paid for that...or take a vacation day and be paid for the whole day. After gaining her assurance that there was no urgent work needing my specific attention that couldn't wait, I decided to turn my happy little Cajun ass right back around and head out of there.

So there are, it seems, some advantages to a job with union membership. And this week's suckitude has been lessened to a not insignificant degree. I plan to spend the remains of the day taking care of various nagging chores and resting up to hit the ground running like gangbusters in the morning.
