Comedian Dick Martin, who delivered the punch lines to straight man Daniel Hale "Dan" Rowan for five years on the now classic NBC series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, has died at the age of 86 of severe respiratory illness in a Santa Monica, CA hospital. (Thanks to
jrittenhouse for the heads-up and link to BBC News' obituary.)
He and Rowan, oddly enough, were both born in the same year—1922, with Dick older by about six months—even though Rowan preceded him in death much earlier, in 1987 of lymphatic cancer at 65. Martin had apparently been suffering for some time and needed help to breathe for the past year. He and Rowan together hosted what became a landmark for television sketch comedy, and began the trend of sitting U.S. Presidents appearing on such shows with the late Richard Nixon putting his own spin on the show's trademark catchphrase: "Sock it to me?!?"
Rest easy, Mr. Martin, and thank you for giving us so many laughs...not to mention our introduction to the talents of Goldie Hawn, Jo Anne Worley, Henry Gibson, Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi and so many others.
