I have just come back from seeing Marvel Studios' latest effort at monetizing its superhero properties in other media bringing the fantastic concepts of its comic-book creators to the silver screen. And I am here to tell you that the new Jon Favreau-directed Iron Man movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, kicks at least seventeen distinct varieties of ass. Check out the movie's official website to find out more...or better yet, just go see the damn thing already. And don't walk—run. Even if you've never read a single page of the comic book on which it is based, you'll enjoy it...and if you have, it'll be even more awesome.

I do not believe it an exaggeration to class this as the best superhero-based film to come out of Marvel's character stable to date, bar none—yes, I said better than all three Spider-Man films, all three X-Men films, 2003's Ang Lee-directed Hulk (which has also been remade for a new release June 13th, and for which a trailer ran before the movie tonight) and the two Fantastic Four films. It may even be better than all of them put together...and good enough to stand alongside Superman: The Movie and Batman Begins, from the Distinguished Competition (as they used to be referred to in Marvel lettercols).

One other piece of advice: Stay through the very end of the closing credits. I promise, you won't be sorry...especially if you're a fan of Marvel Comics' Ultimate universe.

Loved it, particularly Downey's bravado and vulnerability as Tony Stark.

Two words: Awe. Some.

We were going to go see it tonight but ran out of time. My son got home late from work and going after he got home would have cut into the six-year-old's bedtime, and we couldn't go without him. For one thing he worships at the altar of anything Hasbor or Marvel and there would have been no living with him had we gone without him. And second, one of us would have had to stay home to watch him, and I don't think we wanted to get into a fist fight over which one.

So I think we're going to arrange to go later in the week. My wife already went on Thursday (she doesn't have to get up early to go to work so she went to the midnight show) and came home saying, "You GOTTA go see this."

and now I'm back. Excellent movie - but obviously neither most of the audience, nor the cinema staff, knew that there was a last scene after the credits. (oh come on - there's been a scene like that in EVERY Marvel movie of recent years). The lights went up as soon as the main part (ie principal cast list) of the credits had finished rolling. We sat still, along with maybe about half a dozen other fen, and the cleaning staff and projectionist eventually got the message - the staff sat down and the projectionist put the lights back down.

Not happening. I have come to loathe the character, following the Civil War storyline. Even knowing this is an origin story, with Stark not yet fully consumed by alcohol and fascism, I hate him.

Looking forward to the Hulk reboot, though.

You should've come with us last Thursday. Tony from Dragonshorde had bought out the showing, so we got to see it free. It was far away in Lithonia, but in a cool mall with a Borders & an outdoor food court. We could've hung out.

It was a fun movie; my spouse in particular enjoyed it, which was nice, since he drove.

:)
