For those who are wondering, yes, I'm at work today. I decided that however much I may support the broad goals of The World Can't Wait (see earlier post), I prefer to give the political system a chance to work properly before taking to the streets. Some Navy officer once described his service as "designed by geniuses to be run by idiots"; I think the same applies to our Constitution and the government it establishes, regardless of how much the GOP and conservatives have been able to rig parts of it to their advantage. If that makes me a wimp, so be it; I got bills to pay.

My local NPR station, WABE 90.1 FM, reminds me that its sister station, WPBA-TV, is re-running, for the first time in decades, the landmark 1987 Public Broadcasting Service documentary series Eyes On the Prize, chronicling the African-American civil rights movement of the mid-20th century. The public TV network is re-airing the show as part of its American Experience series. PBS' website also is finally getting a DVD set of the series for sale (to teachers, at least) here. Wired News explains the legal problems involved in getting this copyrighted-clip-heavy series back on the air or on DVD in the U.S. in an article here, and tells us about a group doing some guerrilla distribution of the series via peer-to-peer networks here. There may be some timely instructive material here about the possibilities of a nonviolent popular movement to bring about sociopolitical change. It starts tonight and will continue on succeeding Thursdays; check your local listings for times. (And a side note: one of the good things about living where I do is that I get to have one of the leading figures in the movement then and now, John L. Lewis (D-GA), as my representative in Congress.)
