Today is Blog Against Torture Day. If you click on my friends-list link, you will find at least a dozen of my friends expressing why this is important, some of them far more eloquently than I ever could hope to do.
filkertom is one particularly pungent example, as he usually is on political matters.
Once upon a time, the United States of America was actually admired around the world, looked to by other nations and peoples as a model for freedom and progress. One reason for this was that we did not condone torture, did not tolerate it being used against our citizens, and sure as Goddamned hell did not practice it as a tool of warfare. Thanks to the current occupant of the White House, his appointees and his cronies, this is not something we can say any longer.
And lest there be any lingering question: Waterboarding absolutely, positively is torture, every bit as much as the rack, thumbscrews, electrodes attached to vulnerable body parts, hot tongs to the toenails, deliberate sleep deprivation and other methods of mental and physical degradation. (Are you listening, Mr. Attorney General?)
Torture must not be countenanced on any account, in any nation on Earth...and especially not in this one. No more Abu Ghraibs and no more Gitmos. Speak, write, march, protest and pressure our leaders to end the atrocities now.
