The science fiction writing community has lost a genuine talent. Janet Kagan, author of the 1987 Pocket Books Star Trek novel Uhura's Song among others, has died after a long struggle with acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (Notice courtesy of [personal profile] supergee by way of [profile] james_nicoll by way of a post by Ellen Datlow on sff.net relayed from Susan Casper.)

I met her once at a Worldcon a few years back, and she was very gracious and friendly to a fan who had only read the one book by her. I was sorely disappointed to learn she was not planning to write any more novels featuring those characters she created for it...and now there never will be, unless some other writer in Pocket's stable somehow gets permission and can recapture what she gave them. My heart goes out to her family, friends, colleagues and fans in this difficult hour.

By eerie coincidence, Amazon has recently put out a Kindle edition of the book, as well as offering the original paperback; I highly recommend it. "Tail-Kinker-to-Ennien out"...for the very last time.

I never got to meet her, but I was assured by someone who did know her that Tail-Kinker-to-Ennien was a MarySu - in the best possible way.

I really enjoyed her books. She will be sorely missed.

I actually remember Uhura's Song! It's one of the few Star Trek novels I remember reading. I'm sad to hear she's gone.

:(

I remember reading Uhura' Song a few times. I liked that novel and it was one of the FEW (only one?) unsigned Star Trek book I kept when I got rid of the book years ago to a SF library. (I did read the trek books in the late 80s and early 90s.) It was one of the BEST novels in the series and I read about the first 50 or so.

Too bad she is gone. At least her stories will not be forgotten.

I keep seeing folks mention the passings of people I would like to have met. About three or four folk have mentioned her today... *sigh* yet another....

It's interesting that you fully traced out the chain of news... what a tangled web we weave...
