In Memoriam: Janet Megson Kagan, 1946-2008
Mar. 1st, 2008 03:57 pmThe science fiction writing community has lost a genuine talent. Janet Kagan, author of the 1987 Pocket Books Star Trek novel Uhura's Song among others, has died after a long struggle with acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (Notice courtesy of

I met her once at a Worldcon a few years back, and she was very gracious and friendly to a fan who had only read the one book by her. I was sorely disappointed to learn she was not planning to write any more novels featuring those characters she created for it...and now there never will be, unless some other writer in Pocket's stable somehow gets permission and can recapture what she gave them. My heart goes out to her family, friends, colleagues and fans in this difficult hour.
By eerie coincidence, Amazon has recently put out a Kindle edition of the book, as well as offering the original paperback; I highly recommend it. "Tail-Kinker-to-Ennien out"...for the very last time.

Date: 2008-03-02 12:46 am (UTC)I remember reading Uhura' Song a few times. I liked that novel and it was one of the FEW (only one?) unsigned Star Trek book I kept when I got rid of the book years ago to a SF library. (I did read the trek books in the late 80s and early 90s.) It was one of the BEST novels in the series and I read about the first 50 or so.
Too bad she is gone. At least her stories will not be forgotten.
