kradical, I have just learned that still another old con-friend of mine has had the Universe suddenly decide to take a nice big dump all over him and his family. Robert Greenberger, Connecticut-based SF author and former DC Comics editor, has just been informed that his adult son Robbie has leukemia. More details can be found on his own blog. (Thanks to Keith for the link.)
Bob has been more kind to me over the years than anyone who sees/talks to him so seldom deserves, even to the point of once taking time out in the middle of a freakin' Worldcon where he was a program participant to review some penciling samples I'd done and offer constructive criticism. He has always made glad noises whenever I've run into him at a con and had interesting stuff to talk about, one-on-one or in panels. He's also fiendishly good at what he does for a living, and he even had the excellent taste to be an early fan of the Boogie Knights. (I suspect he was one proud papa when his little girl Kate got invited to join Keith singing in the Knights as "Alice, the Cooper's Daughter.")
Needless to say, he, his wife Deb, Kate and Robbie are all having to make some serious adjustments to their lives now that Robbie has been diagnosed with this. As for me, coming on the heels of Joey Grillot's death in New Orleans on Christmas Day and Greg McMullan's this month in Virginia, 2008 so far has not been a terribly good year for my friends. Kate also has posted a request on her own blog for donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in her brother's name, with bribes of knitted goodies or other items for non-knitters. Iexpect to be kicking in myself shortly (UPDATE, 2/8: donated $10.00), and hope you will too.
This just sucks the Great Moose C-ck in the Sky, as my old pal
darrenzieger would say. It's got to be a better year from here on out...and that's the only hope and consolation I can draw from all this.

Date: 2008-02-06 11:41 pm (UTC)Miracles have been few and far between lately, so we're due for one. I'm hoping the miracle blows in their direction.

Date: 2008-02-07 12:51 am (UTC)The figures are at least reasonably hopeful. It's gonna be a fight, though, and there's a significant chance that it may be a losing one, long-term.
That and this hits very close to home, as I'm facing my second round of therapy next week (I'm in dosimetry now).... 'course, the current odds are that after this, it's only 2% likely that it'll come back... and if it does, we nuke it again. It's all the *other* crap going on in my life that makes this more, ahh, fun than it ought to be.
*sigh* ah, well. Chop wood, carry water. Not much else you can do... other than maybe write a filk about it.
