Yes, the diabolical secret plot of Jonathan Coulton to achieve universal domination through insidiously catchy soft-rock tunes with seriously demented lyrics is proceeding apace. I just discovered that not only can I create a JoCo station on Pandora.com (and I have!), but he already has over 300 fans listed. More JoCo Zombies to infect recruit! Muah-hah-hah-hah...

Good for JoCo! But....

Then they fucking lied to me.

Unless JoCo has been signed with a major label and I wasn't aware of it.

I wrote to them just a couple of months ago, to ask how I would go about offering my stuff to them, and they said they were only accepting major labels.

Well, unless Jon has signed with some major label in the last couple of months (and if so, I have yet to hear of it), I fear you may well be right about Pandora lying to you. I'm sorry to be the inadvertent bearer of you-were-screwed tidings.

Or maybe they changed their policy between then and now.

Wait, they're capable of that much thought?

Huh. You learn something every day.

I have no idea -- it's just a possibility that would need to be ruled out before concluding that it was either malice (they blew off Tom Smith's inquiry with a lie) or incompetence (their reps didn't know their own policies).

Pandora is a web-based application designed and run by the Music Genome Project, which has cataloged thousands upon thousands of songs by various artists in all genres to determine the characteristics of sound and composition they have in common. The thinking goes that if you like, say, "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" by The Police, you might also like hearing songs that are constructed with similar instrumentation, vocals, rhythms etc.

It's at Pandora.com and you can sign up for free, then immediately create "stations" that will automatically play songs based on the sound of a particular artist, group or single song and giving you the chance to endorse or veto each selection. I have several of them set up under the handle "CajunGypsy." (I don't think you need sign up to listen, but you may need to in order to create your own stations.) It's an innovative way to get you listening to new music you might not have chosen or found on your own.

That sounded like something I would have liked to hear, since I only have one of his albums so far, but the station refuses to allow Canadian listeners (based on IP address). Oh well.

I'm sorry you had trouble; I had no idea Pandora was restricting use to US residents only. (The legal rights tied up in the songs may have something to do with it.)
