In the first major death of the new year, New Zealand's favorite son and Mount Everest's conqueror has passed away at 88; cause and location of his death are not as yet reported. His fellow Kiwis pay tribute to him here.

I've never understood, on a gut level, what drives guys like Hilary to verb the adjective-est noun -- at least, not when it come to nouns that, when you fail to verb them successfully, tend to kill you -- but without a a handful of them out of every few thousand births, we'd be a poorer, and much more boring, species.
