The lady who gives my life meaning,
singing_phoenix, has been staying with me these last couple of weeks, as you all know, and we have spent much of them traveling down south and up north to visit family and friends. All that time, she has suffered agony as old fillings and decaying teeth caused her excruciating pain.
Today, having arranged to delay her flight back to Kenya (originally scheduled for today), she was able to get in to see her Stateside dentist and then was referred to a specialist for extraction, who was (mirabile dictu!) both close by and able to do the work within an hour of the first dentist's visit. She is now sleeping with bolshoi painkiller in her and on a limited soft-food/liquid diet until further notice.
Her boss at CDC's Global AIDS Project office in Nairobi agreed, however reluctantly, that it might be better for her to see a dentist here than try to get to one back home who might no longer be there, due to the continuing violence around the disputed Kenyan presidential election. (Latest word is that South Africa's resident Nobel laureate, Desmond Tutu, has arrived in Nairobi to try brokering peace between the parties/tribes, and has already met with the opposition leader; he's one of a tiny handful I'd bet on to pull it off if anyone can. Stay tuned.) And Northwest/KLM were even willing to waive the hefty change fee for rescheduling her return flight, given events, so now she goes back Tuesday.
In the meanwhile, I am myself recovering from bronchitis aggravated by a head cold caused by exposure to extreme low temperatures both in central NJ/eastern PA and here, having coughed so much my ribs now ache when I do it, so we are both pretty much housebound for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow? We'll get back to you. (And thanks to
autographedcat and
kitanzi for accompanying us to dinner and a show at a lovely Japanese steakhouse in Alpharetta, Ichiban, last night; the show was put on by the chef at our table, and a good meal and time were had by all.)
